How to dress for America’s birthday

It’s America’s birthday – and not just any birthday. The big 2-5-0 is around the corner in 2026, and this summer is the perfect time to start dressing the part. As the fireworks sparkle and lemonade flows, your closet can do a little celebrating of its own. Think of this season’s style as a love letter to Americana fashion.

The fun part? Everyone can get in on the fashion fun – guys and girls, young and old! Here’s what we’re reaching for as the Fourth of July approaches, and how to wear these looks with charm, confidence, and a touch of red-white-and-blue flair:

1. Denim everything

From your dad’s vintage Levi’s to that oversized chambray button-up, denim is the unofficial uniform of the American summer. Don’t shy away from mixing washes or pairing a jean skirt with a denim jacket.

For Women:

Try a denim midi skirt with a tucked-in white tank and sandals, a denim vest over a prairie dress, or go full casual-cool with loose high-rise cutoffs and a chambray button-down.

For Men:

A classic denim or chambray shirt over a white tee and khaki shorts keeps things crisp and comfortable. Or opt for light-wash jeans with a short-sleeved button-up for dinner with friends.

2. Fringe, suede, and leather accents

These textures speak with a soft southern twang – and a lot of confidence. A suede fringe jacket or leather ankle boot can elevate even the simplest tee-and-shorts combo. Just don’t overdo it. You want Americana, not rodeo queen (unless, of course, you are one).

For Women:

A suede fringe jacket over a sundress, leather ankle boots with your favorite jeans, leather-trimmed crossbody or fringe-accented sandals can be the statement pieces you didn’t know you needed.

For Men:

Think suede loafers, a leather belt with vintage charm, or a canvas jacket with subtle fringe detailing on the back or sleeves.

3. Woven and textured accessories

Swap out your sleek city tote for something a little more tactile: raffia, straw, woven textures that whisper “picnic-ready.” A straw hat or raffia clutch can take a white dress from simple to standout in seconds.

For Women:

Pair a sundress with a woven tote and espadrille sandals for an effortlessly elevated look, or add a braided belt and floppy straw hat for sun-ready ease.

For Men:

Try a straw fedora with linen pants and loafers, comfy espadrilles, or carry a canvas-and-leather crossbody for a functional twist.

4. Plaid, gingham, and eyelet

These prints are practically synonymous with American summers. Plaid is as classic as apple pie. Gingham has graduated from picnic table to Paris runway, but it still shines best in breezy summer dresses and button-ups. Eyelet is your not-so-basic basic: feminine, breathable, and ideal for sweltering summer days.

For Women:

Go sweet and summery in a gingham sundress or skirt with a fitted tank, or a puff-sleeve eyelet blouse with high-waisted shorts.

For Men:

A short-sleeve plaid or gingham dress shirt with rolled-up chinos or tucked into khaki shorts with a belt strikes just the right balance between classic and current.

5. Cowboy hats & boots

Before you scroll past: yes, you can wear these and not look like you’re headed to a costume party. A well-placed cowboy boot grounds a sundress in earthy charm; a straw hat with soft waves feels nostalgic in the best way.

For Women:

Style cowboy boots with a flowy mini dress or a midi skirt and tee. A straw cowboy hat pairs perfectly with loose waves and denim. Caramel boots and minimal gold jewelry, perfect combo.

For Men:

Western boots with dark jeans and a rolled-sleeve button-down create an effortlessly rugged look. Add a hat if you’re feeling bold.

6. Red, white, & hues of blue

Rep the stars and stripes in a subtle, intentional way by forming a color palette through your outfit. A cherry-red lip, a soft blue linen top, or crisp white wide-leg pants feel quietly patriotic and unmistakably chic.

For Women:

Try a crisp white dress with red earrings and a navy bandana. Or mix a cherry-red tank with denim and gold sandals, maybe a white belt.

For Men:

A navy-striped shirt or red-and-blue plaid with white linen pants, or classic blue jeans, a white sweater tee, and a red baseball cap add just the right pop of patriotic color.

7. The white sundress

There’s no garment more symbolic of summertime freedom than the white dress. It flutters in the breeze, adapts to every setting, and plays well with any accessory.

For Women:

Pair it with sneakers or slides for daytime, swap in wedges or boots for evening. Add a belt or denim jacket to switch it up.

For Men:

Okay, not a sundress – but white jeans, linen shirts, or sweater polos, offer the same easy elegance and pair well with any July 4th backdrop.
