12 Things I wish I’d put on my wedding registry

With the joy of wedding planning comes the challenge of building a registry.

For many couples, adhering to basic registry guides and standards often leaves you wondering if the marketed “essentials’’ are what you both really need to build your new home.

Ultimately a registry should reflect your lifestyle, needs, and what brings you joy – while also appreciating the generosity of the people who want to celebrate your new life together. So before adding the Tupperware and bone china serving plate, think bigger!

We’re sharing some overlooked yet incredibly practical items to consider for your registry!

The Smart Way to Register

Before adding, ask yourselves:

  • Will we use this daily?
  • Do we want to upgrade an existing old reliable?
  • Will this make our life easier, more enjoyable, or more beautiful?
  • Does this reflect our hobbies and lifestyle? Think outside the box to what you really want (new hiking gear, sewing machine, wine fridge, hammocks).
  • Can we purchase smaller essentials inexpensively ourselves (we see you, dish towels and toilet scrubbers) instead of taking registry space away from items for which we could use the help in purchasing?

Smart, beautiful, and practical picks for newly married couples

1. KitchenAid mixer: the do-it-all wonder

This isn’t just for baking—this powerhouse can knead dough, whip cream, make pasta, and even shred chicken. It’s built to last a lifetime, comes in pretty colors, and is worth every inch of counter space.

2. A gorgeous bookcase: For books, memories & beautiful things

A well-made bookcase isn’t just furniture – it’s a place for your stories, keepsakes, and personality to shine. Elevate your reading nook.

3. Cast iron skillet & Dutch oven: Kitchen staples that improve with age

From sizzling steaks to slow-cooked stews, a good cast iron pan and Dutch oven will never let you down. These classic pieces are virtually indestructible and only improve with use.

4. Power washer: Oddly satisfying & surprisingly essential

This one’s a little unexpected, but once you effortlessly blast away dirt from your patio, siding, or car, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

5. Patio furniture & a fire pit: Make outdoor living cozy

Your home extends beyond its walls! A comfortable patio set, a fire pit, or a chiminea creates a space for slow mornings, evening gatherings, and starry-night conversations.

6. Entertaining accessories: Elevate your hosting game

If you love to host, think beyond crystal salad bowls and pick a few accessories that are truly you: a bar cart and cocktail tools, a tea set and cake stand. Serve with fun and style.

7. A really great vacuum (Or a handy mini one!)

A good vacuum makes cleaning faster, easier, and dare we say… more fun? Cordless? Robot? Handheld? Pick one that makes daily life smoother.

8. Food dehydrator & pressure canner: A home chef’s dream

Love cooking, preserving, or snacking on homemade dried fruit? These tools help you take kitchen creativity to the next level.

9. Espresso machine: Upgrade your morning coffee

If you drink coffee daily, why not make it exceptional? A good espresso machine saves money, tastes amazing, and turns your kitchen into a café.

10. Matching kitchen organization: Because clutter is a constant headache

Transform your kitchen counter with matching canisters for flour, coffee, spices and more (don’t forget the bread box). From pretty to sleek, this small change can yield big impact!

11. For fitness fans: Work(out) from home with ease

If you’re a workout enthusiast, bring the gym into your home by registering for hand weights, an elliptical, or resistance bands.  And for extra motivation? A great pair of headphones.

12. Beautiful (but sturdy!) dinnerware: Elevate every meal

Bone china is gorgeous, but not always practical for daily use. Stoneware, pottery, or strong porcelain offer the perfect balance of style and function. Choose a set with gorgeous textures, colors, or patterns that you can enjoy every day, not just for Thanksgiving dinner.

BONUS: Consider group gifts!

Some of these are bigger-ticket items, but many registries allow group gifting so your loved ones can chip in for something truly meaningful without blowing their budget. Win-win!

Final takeaway

You only get one wedding registry – add things that will truly elevate your life, not collect dust in the back of a cabinet. This is your opportunity to curate a collection of lasting items that will truly serve and delight in everyday life and honor the generous outpouring of your loved ones.

The value in this article is in thinking about the life you want to live together, and visualizing the day-to-day routine. A lot of these items are just not practical for people who may be limited to small apartments or have to move frequently. Bone China is very strong, stronger than stoneware etc. It usually should not be in the dishwasher. We still use the KitchenAid mixer bought 40 years ago, but who knows – modern appliances are not built to last as long as they used to be… A long happy marriage is built on commitment and working for the good of the other and the good of the union, and part of that is worshipping and praying together. Be serious about Our Lord and your vocation, but don’t take yourself too seriously.

This is a bit materialistic for a true relationship to last. It’s not what you “need” to begin a life together. These are things that you “want”. The purpose of wedding presents used to be the basics for a young couple starting out with nothing and building their life together. The items requested here are a bit much to expect , right up there with a “Go Fund Me” honeymoon or house. What is there to look forward to if you start out with all the unnecessary things you want, that really don’t bring true happiness?

My son and his fiancee posted several beautiful religious decor items on their registry, like crucifixes, Last Supper portrait, pictures of the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts. I am deeply touched that these are things they value!

Unfortunately, not sure about the KitchenAid mixer any more. We got one for our wedding 3.5 years ago, and it just doesn’t hold up as well as some of the older models seem to do. The head bucks up and down and the lock has even started to come loose. Just a warning to anyone considering one; a handed down one may be better, and more special.
