Subtle science of stacking jewelry

Every woman has her consumer’s kryptonite. It may be shoes, bags, holistic juice shots, or yeast for that sourdough starter. Mine is jewelry. No matter what is actually on my shopping list, I will find a way to sneak a peek at some earrings. Today, I’m here to share my secrets as a serial jewelry stacker.

The subtle science behind stacking jewelry

Layering jewelry should be easy, unique, and timeless, which calls for a foolproof system. That’s where the subtle science of stacking jewelry is helpful. Following these basic guidelines when accessorizing keeps you looking pulled together without the toll of too much extra effort or time.

Start by taking inventory of what you have. Look for items that can serve as a base piece that can be worn multiple days in a row. Avoid the complication of pulling out special occasion jewelry that will need to be stowed away soon. You want the pieces to look lived in rather than overdone.

Writer’s Note: As a woman there’s a fine line between exercising your creativity, glorifying God with your feminine beauty, and falling into superficial vanity. I was convicted of this when I had on a couple bracelets and heard this soft, still question, “Is one not enough?”

It’s worth asking yourself if stacking jewelry will become an excuse to make an idol of self and material things or a practical way to be creative and embrace beauty through these questions:

  • Is what I’m wearing appropriate for the occasion?
  • Am I trying to compensate for something else?
  • Is wearing jewelry everyday non-negotiable for me? Should it be?
  • Is this consuming too much of my attention for it to be healthy?
  • Is taking this much time to get ready for the day, an event, et. al. too much or just right?

The power of intentional imbalance

These aren’t hard and fast rules, but typically, if you have on statement earrings, skip a statement necklace. Vice versa? Choose subtle studs for earrings to pair with an eye-catching necklace. Minimalist rings and earrings tend to blend well with everything, especially if you are stacking bracelets.

Stacking jewelry allows you to layer heirloom and well-loved pieces with contemporary finds, and break the taboo of mixing metals while you’re at it.

Necklaces

Layering multiple necklaces creates an elevated, cool statement, especially when you’re wearing a casual outfit like a white tee or button down and jeans. Focus on texture, length, and thickness. Start with layering chain lengths in odd numbers of three or five. Typically, 16”, 18”, and 20” are best for necklaces of different lengths to create a layered effect. To create depth and texture, balance delicate, thin necklaces with bolder statement pieces. Don’t be afraid to play around!

Bracelets

The focus here is texture, yes, but also movement. Begin with a foundational statement bracelet and add other complementary bracelets based upon the colors, texture, or feel of that original piece. This creates a dynamic, rhythmic, lived-in feel!

Rings

If you have large hands and fingers, smaller and daintier rings will create the illusion that your hands are out of proportion. Thicker statement rings are an easy solution! You can also stack multiple thinner rings into a custom statement ring. Small rings tend to compliment small hands! It’s all about finding a combination that looks not only visually beautiful, but is functional.

Keep practicality in mind. Minimalist jewelry and subtle rings are great for the office. If you’re a mom with small kids, try a favorite pair of stud earrings and a durable necklace.

It’s time to experiment

The most memorable stacks aren’t the ones assembled by the algorithm or trend report. They’re a collection that reflects who you are at your core and your innate and natural beauty. It’s the bangles borrowed from a grandmother, that medal discovered in a vintage shop, or purchased because they made your heart beat a little faster. A delicate chain beside a chunky cuff. Pearls that coexist happily with gold. That’s where creativity comes in, so go experiment!
