Published on December 27, 2025
Mirrors are often overlooked, but this visual subtlety is precisely what makes them so well-suited for styling your space. Mirrors’ ability to reflect can make a big impact depending on their angle, placement, and framing. Here are our best tips for styling mirrors in your own home!
Double the view, double the light!
A classic design tip is to place your mirror opposite a large window so that it reflects the natural light source and functions as a “second window” to make the space brighter and more airy. Find a window with a beautiful view, especially with a view of trees or greenery to bring the outdoors in! If your windows do not have a desirable view or light source, consider facing the mirror across from a soft lamp and an indoor plant to multiply the impact of those features.
The power of shape: Soften, stretch, or ground your space
Mirrors come in all shapes and sizes, each offers its own design impact. Since mirrors reflect light and guide the eye, it is no surprise that the shape will change the way we perceive a given room. A round mirror can soften the space and provide a more natural vibe while square or rectangular mirrors are excellent at anchoring and space and providing grounding. If the rectangular mirror is longer horizontally (landscape) it serves to visually widen the space. If it is placed vertically (portrait) then it will highlight the ceiling height and draw the eye upward. If you want to add architectural interest, consider an arched shape which adds a touch of elegance. When selecting a mirror, pay attention to the symmetry in your space. If your furnishings already provide a lot of visual angles, consider counteracting the severity with a rounded or asymmetrical mirror. If your room is already very mellow and cozy, a rectangular mirror can help to add clean lines and structure to balance out the space.
Think beyond the crystal clear
When we think of mirrors we often think of a spotless, clean reflection, but exploring different patinas can be a whole new design adventure! Antique mirrors offer their own unique flavor that can add vintage charm to your space. This finish naturally occurs over time when the metal backing of the mirror oxidizes over time. If you can’t find a real antique mirror, you can recreate the aging with by applying a chemical solution (like diluted bleach or paint remover) to the back of the mirror. Make sure you have a well ventilated work area if you plan to chemically age your mirror!
Get crafty: Elevate mirrors with DIY frames
Dramatic frame styles and shapes are always changing with the trends. Capitalize on the best of a trending style by DIYing a custom frame around a basic and affordable mirror. If boho is your style, use twine or a roll of rattan to glue around a simple existing frame. For glam, consider gold or brass tone spray paint. If you want a statement piece, visit a craft store or thrift store to find interesting textures and patterns to paint in a monochrome palette and glue around the mirror rim. If you’ve been eyeing a pricey asymmetrical mirror, you can build up a bold asymmetrical frame out of clay, paper-mache, or cardboard that will give the illusion that the mirror has been reshaped. Skip the high price tag without missing out on the bold design interest of trending mirror styles.
