Published on July 28, 2025

First day of college outfits are important because when you step on campus for the first time, nobody knows who you are. You can start fully over and reinvent yourself. A fun, but daunting task and what you wear definitely plays into the new you.
You want to give effortlessly cool, as if you belong there, even if you’re still figuring it out. You’re not the only one. Let’s show your classmates, teachers, and RA that you’re ready for this next phase (and give you the confidence to get through the first day).
We’ll break down how to balance personal style with a dash of sophistication, tap into trends without losing your individuality, and most importantly—make an entrance without saying a word. Because first impressions last, but great style? That evolves with you.

For her

Casual look:
- A graphic tee with a midi skirt and a cardigan for indoors. Pull the look together with a pair of sneakers to be not only cool, but comfortable.
- High waisted, flowy pants, cropped tee shirt, jean jacket and your sandals of choice. It’s the perfect combination for sunny September days.
- Pair a white tee, looser fitting, high waisted jeans, it’s a cool girl classic. Feel free to have fun with your shoes by wearing ballet flats, mary-janes or boots.
Style Tip: Mix in subtle (or not so subtle) minimalist silver or gold jewelry—layered hoop earrings, multiple textured necklaces, or stacked rings do the job.

Elevated look:
- Throw on a jean jacket with a patterned sundress. Whatever foot wear you choose, boots, flats, or even sneakers, you’ll be giving pretty, poised, and ready for class.
- Show you mean business with a crisp, button down, jeans and pointed-toe flats. Add statement earrings for a bit of personal flair!
- Go school-girl chic with a plaid, pleated skirt. Add a lightweight sweater, draped over the shoulders or layered on top of a tee shirt. Make sure the shoes match the sweater for a seamless look.
Style Tip: First day of class is usually syllabus day 🙂 Take advantage of the light workload to socialize and accessorize. Carry your essentials in a cute tote bag or a sleek, black purse carried around your shoulder.
For him

Casual look:
- A denim button down paired with black jeans and a ball cap is a winner. It’s simple, but never basic.
- Rep your favorite team by wearing a jersey, cardigan and a nice pair of trousers. Be sure to wear your best sneakers to complete this look.
- Try a looser work jean with plenty of pockets and pair it with a graphic tee. Now, add cowboy or work boots and a jean jacket. Now, add a belt that matches your shoes. People will think you’re a streetwear sophomore.
Style Tip: To find the right jeans with the right fit, try thrifting vintage denim. Denim from Wrangler, Levi’s and Carhart 20 years ago have that masculine structured cut that’s often missing from today’s styles.

Elevated look:
- Build your base with blue jeans and leather loafers. Layer a blazer over a v-neck sweater complete with a plain, breathable tee underneath.
- Add a knitted polo and fitted linen pants for a beachy, but put-together outfit. Wear sandals or leather loafers.
- Wear a casual, fitted tee shirt or henley with a belt and pleated linen or cotton pants. Be sure to wear boots, loafers or an elevated shoe.
Style Tip: This is the last phase of your life where backpacks won’t make you stick out like a sore thumb. Embrace the functionality of rocking the backpack.
