You could spend hours opening dozens of browser tabs, scouring Etsy and all the corners of Catholic artisan websites looking for the perfect Miraculous Medal to wear. Or, you can stop the search, take a deep breath, and continue reading. If you’re looking for unique Marian finds, this is a girl’s guide to shopping for a Miraculous Medal.

The real story behind the Miraculous Medal devotion

The story behind this beloved medal worn across the globe starts in France. Catherine Labouré’s mom died when she was just nine years old in 1815. After the funeral, Catherine reached for a statue of Mary, and said, “Now, dear Blessed Mother, you will be my mother.”

Years later, when Catherine was a young Daughter of Charity, the Blessed Mother appeared to her in the convent chapel. Standing on a globe with rays of light streaming from her hands, Mary asked Catherine to have a medal made in this image, promising special graces to those who wear it with confidence. The medal came to be known as the Miraculous Medal because of the many graces and conversions devotees of the image received after wearing the medal.

The imagery on the back of the medal also holds importance. At its center is a large “M” beneath a cross, symbolizing Mary beneath the Cross of Christ on Calvary. Around it are 12 stars, traditionally understood as representing Mary as Queen in a nod to the 12 stars in Revelation. Below are two hearts – The Sacred Heart of Jesus, and Mary’s Immaculate Heart.
