Chasing both sustainability and self-care has become a modern ideal. The reality of everyday American life rarely makes either easy. Overhauling your routine can feel expensive, inconvenient, or simply unrealistic.

The good news? It doesn’t have to be. Small, low-effort changes can deliver meaningful results for both your body and the planet. These clean, green swaps prove that impact doesn’t require a complete lifestyle reset.

1. Stay away from sulfates and seed oils

Sulfates are the combination of sodium lauryl and sodium laureth sulfate and are found in shampoo, body wash, dish soaps, and even face cleanser. These cleaning agents are approved by the FDA, however, these sulfates can be a little too good at their job. They strip your hair of natural oils, can irritate your skin, clog pores, and seriously damage keratin.

Off to the kitchen! Seed oils are often used in fried foods and bottled salad dressings. They contain BHA / BHT which are preservatives to extend a product’s shelf life, but also are known to cause cancer. Cutting back is a simple way to reduce your intake of ultra-processed ingredients. Another bonus? It naturally steers you away from many less nutritious foods that rely on them.

2. Protein powder (the right ones)

Protein is super good for you, but it also depends on the source. Read specific protein powder ingredient lists with a watchful eye. Since protein powder is considered a dietary supplement, it is not regulated in the same way as food or medication. Some protein powders can contain added sugars, artificial sweeteners, and preservatives. They are ultra-processed with soy or low-quality whey that can spike cortisol (your stress hormone) and cause digestive issues. Some plant-based options have raised concerns for trace heavy metal contamination like lead and arsenic which are absorbed during manufacturing.

The takeaway? Choose thoughtfully because quality makes all the difference.

3. Choose glass over plastic

Microplastics are everywhere and plastic tupperware is no exception. Plastic tupperware can do this sneaky trick called leaching. The chemicals from the plastic after a certain time start to congeal and get into your food. A simple upgrade? Switch to glass or sealed mason jars. It won’t just protect from unwanted microplastic, but your food will stay fresh longer!

4. Ditch the candles

Fragrances like perfumes, laundry detergent, or scented candles contain parabens and should leave your home. Parabens mess with your hormones and masquerade as estrogen, ultimately becoming extra endocrine disruptors. The result? Serious reproductive issues for both men and women.

Instead look for beeswax candles or ones without fragrances. Essential oils are also great to add to a candle or can be made into a natural perfume roll-on.

While soy candles are a greener alternative for the environment, they aren’t for your body. 90% of U.S. soy beans are owned by Monsanto, acquired by Bayer in 2018. This monopoly also owns Roundup and has repeatedly come under fire for cancer-causing agents in the product.

5. Get some fresh air!

This one is painfully simple, but also so realistic that you can start tonight. Opening the windows regularly naturally deodorizes the home and lets trapped scent escape. Avoid Febreeze (it contains parabens, yuck). If you have a green thumb, house plants naturally boost air quality. If you want an air freshener in your car, definitely try one that has essential oils instead.

6. Simplify your laundry routine!

If you want healthier skin and balanced hormones, start with your laundry detergent. Many conventional brands rely on synthetic additives like optical brighteners. These chemicals may make clothes appear cleaner but can irritate skin and pollute waterways. A simpler, safer alternative is easy to make at home. Combine washing soda, baking soda, Epsom salt, and about 40 drops of your preferred essential oil; fresh options like citrus or pine work well.
